ISSVA President's Message

There is a lot of activity behind the scenes at ISSVA, mostly in preparation for our World Congress in Madrid, Spain, to be held 07-10 May, 2024. The Planning Committee, led by Dr. Leo Schultze Kool, and ISSVA staff have been meeting regularly to ensure that this conference will be a success. Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez-Gutierrez is providing valuable and appreciated input so we can have a productive academic and enjoyable experience in Madrid.

Some important updates regarding this meeting:

  1. Over 600 abstracts have been received!! This is a significant increase relative to previous years. The Scientific Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Dov Goldenberg, is currently reviewing submissions, and will notify authors as soon as possible. Clearly, not all abstracts can be accepted. There will be oral scientific presentations with ample time for discussion, and challenging case presentations, as well as many poster presentations. The full program will be posted once the reviewers have completed their task.
  2. Please note that the meeting venue will be at the IFEMA Madrid Conference Center https://www.ifema.es/en , which is located outside the center of Madrid. There are some hotels adjacent to this venue, and several others in the city proper (reachable via Metro). Please note the announcement on the meeting website:
    We know that transportation and access to the venue is important for our attendees, so we are working to keep you well connected to Madrid and the IFEMA throughout the Congress. ISSVA is providing free 4-day metro cards to those interested however you must sign up during registration to receive a metro card. Cards will be available for pick up in your registration materials onsite at the IFEMA. Metro cards are available to in-person attendees only.                                  
  3. The meeting will be hybrid – in person and virtual. For those attending the meeting in person, lunch and light refreshments will be provided. There will be several opportunities to network and view posters and poster presentations.
  4. There will be a networking reception on May 9th in the evening at the Casino de Madrid. Tickets will be available at the time of registration. There may be the chance to purchase tickets on-site, depending on how many tickets are sold during registration but this event has a limited number of tickets, so it is recommended to purchase during registration if you are interested!
  5. Several Enjolras Award applications have been received. These are under review, and we will notify awardees before the end of December

In Memoriam

ISSVA extends our thoughts to the family and friends of Dr. Lutz Meyer, who sadly passed away in November. In 1995, Lutz Meyer joined the department of Pediatric Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Berlin, becoming the Director of the Center for Vascular Anomalies (ZVM) in 2008, with the support of Dr. Milton Waner from New York. In 2013 he moved to the Werner Forssmann Hospital in Eberswalde where he continued to improve vascular anomalies care in northern Germany, organizing an international multidisciplinary conference in 2016. He served as a Treasurer at the German Interdisciplinary Society of Vascular Anomalies received its Honorary Membership last year and was an active participant at ISSVA meetings. Lutz was much more than just a doctor; he embodied his scientific knowledge while treating his patients with tender loving care and while developing vascular anomalies care plans with the consent and involvement of those in his care. He has left an extremely positive impact on his community through his life work as a surgeon. His family, friends, colleagues, and patients have a huge void in their lives without him.

Upcoming Opportunities

Save the Date: ISSVA World Congress 2024 - Madrid, Spain - 7-10 May

The ISSVA World Congress 2024 will be a venue to present the latest advances in research and science in vascular anomalies. It will provide a multidisciplinary forum for many specialties including, but not limited to, interventional radiologists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, oncologists, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, and pathologists.

ISSVA is happy to offer some reduced rate hotel options for our attendees. All of our hotel options have accesible routes via public transport. We will be offering free 4-day metro cards to those interested, however, you must sign up during registration to receive a metro card. You can find the most up-to-date travel information about Madrid by visiting it's official tourism website.

Registration will open up in December, please keep an eye on your email for notification when the registration site opens up!
