ISSVA Statement on COVID-19 Vaccines for Patients with Vascular Anomalies

The COVID-19 viral infection has the potential to cause severe illness and life-threatening complications. While this risk exists at all ages and even in healthy individuals, those with certain pre-existing medical conditions are at even greater risk of COVID-19 related complications.

Vaccines for COVID-19 have been shown to be safe and very effective at decreasing the risk of severe infection or death. The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) recommends full COVID-19 vaccination for all eligible individuals, including eligible children and adults with vascular anomalies, unless they have specific contraindications to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

Depending on the geographic area of residence, different vaccine formulations may be available. We recommend discussing with your primary medical team regarding the best choice of vaccine for each patient’s individual situation.

Universal precautions for protection against COVID-19 infection (such as social distancing, wearing masks, increased hand washing, etc.) are highly advisable regardless of immunization status.
